The series finale of The Vampire Diaries aired on Friday, and as longtime fans of the CW series know, one of the few ways to kill a vampire is to stake them in the heart. Or, to rip their heart out of their body, as the case may be.
Accordingly, the show’s writers revealed today that they wanted to conclude the series by ripping out the hearts of their viewers.
“We thought it only fitting that the series finale should literally rip the hearts out of our audience members’ bodies with as much intensity as possible,” said the show’s co-creator Julie Plec.
“When Alaric [Matthew Davis] gets that glimpse of Jo [Jodi Lyn O’Keefe], we knew it would go a long way toward violently tearing the hearts from the bodies of our viewers,” Plec added.
“And we knew we had to have a powerful moment between Bonnie [Kat Graham] and Caroline [Candice King]. When Bonnie shows up for Caroline and Stefan’s [Paul Wesley] wedding, despite all that he has put her through, we knew it would pull the viewers’ hearts just a little farther from their chest cavities,” continued Plec.
“The long-awaited, much anticipated reunion between Damon [Ian Somerhalder] and Elena [Nina Dobrev] was invaluable to our goal of relieving our viewers of their cardiovascular organs,” said Plec. “But the coup de grace was Stefan’s death. Both brothers needed to be willing to sacrifice themselves for one another. But in the end, it had to be Stefan. He had to be the hero one last time. We knew this would be the last blow that would finally wrest our viewers’ hearts from their bodies entirely, leaving them quivering on the ground, limp and lifeless.”
