A few days ago, I went to an excellent exhibit at the Museum of American Illustration at the Society of Illustrators in New York City. It was called Point of Vision: Celebrating Women Artists in Fantasy and Science Fiction.
It’s no exaggeration to say that every piece I saw was just stunning. As you can imagine, the range of styles and subject matter was huge.
Although the environment is changing, fantasy and especially science fiction are genres that are still often assumed to be dominated by men. But exhibits like this one play an important role in highlighting the work of female artists in the field. In some ways, the exhibit is doing for science fiction and fantasy art what Marisa Stotter’s documentary She Makes Comics is doing for the comic book industry. It’s reminding us that women are, of course, important contributors to the field, and have been for quite some time.
If you’re in the New York area, the exhibit is running until August 20, and I highly recommend checking it out. They also have a pretty great comic art exhibit going on.
